This popular Gauteng birding Hotspot and RAMSAR site often hosts a rarity or two and almost always yields an array of birds. Late March is a very good time for Palaearctic migrant waders as many will have started preparing for their imminent journey and may already show some breeding plumage.
Route: Take the N3 south. At the Klipriver/Nigel off-ramp turn left towards Nigel on the R550. About 20 km further, turn right at a T-junction to Nigel (M63). It is recommended that you continue straight past the signposted turn-off at Union Carriage and drive over the Marievale vlei bridge (± 3km). Turn left into a marked gate (just after Holgatfontein/Nigel sign) heading towards the Conference centre, turn right on a dirt track towards the Hadeda hide but continue straight to a gate. Turn left and then right towards the picnic area. Braai facilities are available.
